The original Hawaiian pronunciation of the ukulele is “oo-koo-ley-ley,” sometimes abbreviated as “uke.” The ukulele originated during the 19th century as a Hawaiian interpretation of a small guitar-like instrument brought to HawaiĘ»i by Portuguese immigrants, which the Hawaiians quickly nicknamed ukulele because the way the fingers played the instrument reminded them of a jumping flea.

The ukulele is based on the Portuguese cavaquinho, a small guitar-like instrument, and became very popular during the Jazz Age. After the 1960s, the ukulele declined in popularity until the late 1990s, when interest in the instrument reappeared. During the 1990s new manufacturers began producing ukuleles, and a new generation of musicians took up the instrument, with Hawaii’s own Jake Shimabukuro known as a virtuoso on the instrument while Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (“Iz”) contributed to the new interest with his 1993 ukulele medley of “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World.”

The ukulele we bring however is a decorative rendition of the instrument, hand-painted with finesse, and ready to add a touch of Hawaii and its musical tradition to your decor.
